The Last Case of Sherlock Holmes

dir. Andrew Paul, Kinetic Theatre Company | 2015

For this piece, inspiration was drawn from a detail in the script in which Sherlock is offstage practicing Boccherini’s Minuet in E Major. I took that work, turned it into a Minor and shifted notes around yet maintaining the rhythm.

The violin parts were recorded and all other instruments were created using the Vienna Symphonic Library with some Logic Pro X virtual instruments supplementing.

CIARA

dir. Karla Boos, Quantum Theatre | 2015

Ciara’s Theme served as a mood board at the beginning of the design process. It was a one-woman show in which the protagonist found herself caught between two conflicting worlds, the one that she created for herself through owning an art gallery and the other that she inherited from her father who was a gangster in Glasgow.

Ciara’s Theme tries to capture these two worlds via the lightness of the Harp and the driving grit of the Distorted Bass.

Mr. Marmalade

dir. Terrence Mosley, Carnegie Mellon University | 2016

A concept track that didn’t really get used in the play, but it was fun twisting the opening them of “Rugrats” into something a bit darker - some time has passed, but I think I was trying to capture that aspect of the play where Mr Marmalade is four-year-old Lucy’s imaginary friend and is representative of the darkness and trauma that can be…er, is…growing up.

Love’s Labor’s Won

dir. Scott Kaiser, Carnegie Mellon University  | 2017

Inspired by Shakespearean lore, the play serves as a sequel to Love’s Labour’s Lost and is set in 1918 following WWI. The major part of the sound design involved composing music for the three instances in the play where the character, Jacquenetta — who is styled after Billie Holiday — breaks into song.

This playlist provides some insight into how the song arrangement evolved.

The Way Out West

dir. Kim Weild, Carnegie Mellon University | 2018

At the beginning of the design process, we were playing with the idea of somehow meshing the Los Alamos part of the script with that of a video game - the details are fuzzy at this point, especially since the videogame aspect was cut. Still, this concept track took inspiration from the first Fallout game.

Unfortunately, I can’t seem to locate the Qlab file from the run - but I’ll keep digging.
